Which institute should I attend?

The SIOP I Institute is designed for those wanting to learn the SIOP Model and its effectiveness in assisting educators in serving English Learners. Participants will receive an in-depth introduction to the Model, the research behind SIOP, and the content; as well as practice in each of the eight components of the model. Participants will also receive a brief introduction to lesson planning for the SIOP Model. (2.5 days)

The SIOP II Institute is intended to be advanced training for individuals who have attended a SIOP I Institute. Building upon the SIOP I content, this institute addresses issues of implementation and refinement of practice. Specific topics include differentiating instruction for multiple language levels in the same class, how to get others “on board” for meeting the needs of English learners, establishing inter-rater reliability through video rating, and peer coaching. In addition, there will be scheduled opportunities for colleagues to share their experiences in obtaining resources, and implementation successes and challenges. (2 days)

The SIOP for Administrators Institute is designed for administrators who want to learn more about the SIOP Model and to gain insight on how implementation of the Model in their schools and districts can have a positive impact on teaching all students, especially English Learners. (2 days)

I have been to an Institute — am I SIOP certified?
The SIOP Institute is a thorough introduction to the SIOP Model. After completing an Institute, attendees are encouraged to share what they have learned with their colleagues, and to use the materials that were distributed at the Institute, provided proper credit is applied. However, SIOP® and the SIOP® Institute are service marks owned exclusively by NCS Pearson, Inc. and attendees are not permitted to charge for SIOP training, nor are they permitted to use materials from the Institute in any for-profit training.

Pearson acquired the SIOP Institute from the creators of the SIOP Model in 2004, and has exclusive ownership of the service mark SIOP®. Pearson is the only provider legally authorized to use the title Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol®, the acronym SIOP, or the title the SIOP Institute.

SIOP District Training FAQ

General

Is this research-based?
Yes. The SIOP protocol is a research-based observation instrument that has been shown to be a valid and reliable measure of sheltered instruction (Guarino, Echevarria, Short, Schoick, Forbes, and Rueda, 2001). The SIOP Model is also used as a model for lesson planning and implementation of high quality sheltered instruction.

The SIOP Model was developed during a seven-year research project (1996-2003) conducted for the Center for Research on Education, Diversity & Excellence, funded by the Institute of Education Sciences, U.S. Department of Education. Subsequently, a study was conducted to establish the validity and reliability of the observation instrument and also, researchers compared ELs in classes whose teachers had been trained in implementing the model to those who had not been. The results showed that those students whose teachers had been trained in implementing the SIOP Model to a high degree had higher narrative and expository writing scores.

For more detail, view the SIOP Research page.
Is this just for EL teachers or all teachers?
The SIOP Model is appropriate for all teachers who wish to use high-quality sheltered instruction for English Learners in content area teaching. As noted by the authors in Making Content Comprehensible for English Learners (3rd edition):

The SIOP Model shares many features recommended for high-quality instruction for all students, but adds key features for the academic success of students learning through a second language, such as including language objectives in every content lesson, developing background knowledge among the students, and attending to specific academic literacy skills. This model can be applied in ESL classes as well as content area classes because it offers a framework for instruction that incorporates best practices for teaching both language and content (p. 237).
How can you help my ELs meet AYP and state accountability requirements?
Our training helps your students by improving teachers’ instruction and focusing on the quality of sheltered lessons for ELs in content areas. The goal is to provide teachers with the skills to teach in mixed ability classrooms without compromising instruction, ultimately providing all students with consistent and quality instruction. Our offerings help teachers learn how to apply the SIOP Model to sheltered instruction to their classroom. Teachers also learn how to use the protocol to refine their lessons and improve instruction.
Who are the trainers?
In order to ensure and maintain consistently effective implementations, SIOP District Trainings are led by highly qualified and experienced Pearson SIOP Service Consultants. Each member of the team brings a degree in education with a focus on English Learners, extensive classroom and adult teaching experience, and a strong knowledge of the research around second language acquisition. Through the Pearson Academy, faculty members are strategically selected, trained in content and adult learning strategies, and supported in interactive facilitation skills throughout their work.
What is your cohort size? Can I train just 5 people? Can I train 50 at once?
Onsite District Training: In the onsite SIOP district training the maximum cohort size is 30 participants.* You can train 50 people at once utilizing two cohorts and two SIOP Service Consultants.

*Note that SIOP Observation and Feedback offering includes four observations of teachers per day maximum.

SIOP Online Course Facilitator Training: For the Onsite SIOP Online Course Facilitator training, the two-day training has a cohort size of 30. For the Connected SIOP Online Course Facilitator Training (done remotely) the cohort size has a maximum of five participants.

Onsite SIOP District Training

What is the sequence of training?
SIOP Training for Teachers is recommended first because this is the foundation upon which the other offerings are built. Advanced training for teachers can be added-on to create a professional development program to meet your specific needs.

SIOP Training for Administrators is highly recommended because this training gives administrators an understanding of the SIOP Model and working vocabulary, so that they can build support for SIOP practices in their school or district.

Below is the recommended training sequence for different participants:

Administrator
  • SIOP Training for Administrators (or SIOP for Administrators Institute)
Teacher
  • SIOP Training for Teachers (or SIOP Institute I/II or SIOP Online Course)
  • Observation and Feedback
  • Lesson Preparation Component Enrichment (recommended first Component Enrichment because many teachers struggle with this topic)
  • Additional Component Enrichment, with topics based on district needs, Service Consultant/Manager recommendation, and/or results from Observation and Feedback offering
Coach
  • SIOP Training for Teachers (or SIOP Institute I/II or SIOP Online Course)
  • Coaching and Implementation
  • Component Enrichment
Can I do the three-day Training for Teachers in two or fewer days?
Our three-day SIOP Training for Teachers is designed to provide a thorough foundational understanding of the SIOP Model, including development of a lesson plan incorporating the SIOP Model components and features, and cannot be condensed into two or fewer days. This training also mirrors the SIOP Model and condensing the time would result in more lecture and less modeling.

But the SIOP I Institute is only two and a half days?
The SIOP I Institute is shorter because it does not include as extensive time for lesson planning as in SIOP Training for Teachers.
What do I accomplish in the three days?
In the three-day SIOP Training, the expected outcomes for teachers are:
  • Understand eight factors that affect second language acquisition
  • Understand the components and features of the SIOP Model
  • Practice each of the eight components
  • Learn how the SIOP Model can be incorporated into lesson planning and lesson delivery
  • Start to build a sample lesson using SIOP
What about coaching?
For additional coaching in specific components of the SIOP model, we offer Component Enrichment. Teachers and coaches will deepen their understanding of the features of each component of the SIOP Model through one-day sessions focusing on a specific component. Sessions include: Lesson Preparation, Building Background, Comprehensible Input, Strategies, Interaction, Practice/Application, Lesson Delivery, and Review and Assessment. Specific Component Enrichment days should be selected based on district needs, SIOP Service Consultant recommendation, and/or results from SIOP Observation and Feedback offering.

For coaches, Pearson also offers the two-day SIOP Coaching and Implementation training. This training is aimed at helping coaches develop the capacity to effectively support their teachers implementing the SIOP Model.
What is included in the training?
SIOP district training includes appropriate materials, generally a Participant Workbook and related book, such as Making Content Comprehensible for English Learners: The SIOP Model. The exact materials vary based on the training. Materials are detailed in the proposal for SIOP district training, based on services selected.

All training includes the travel expenses for Pearson’s SIOP Service Consultants (unless otherwise noted).

Online SIOP District Training

How long is the SIOP Online Course? Is it comparable to the face-to-face training?
The Online Course can be completed in 18-24 hours. It is comparable to the face-to-face SIOP for Teachers training as it provides a foundational understanding of the SIOP Model. The SIOP Online Course is designed around two primary content threads: 1) participants will use the Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol to analyze and rate videotaped classroom lessons; 2) participants will gradually develop a lesson plan implementing the components of the SIOP Model. Through these and other activities, participants will gain a working knowledge of the SIOP Model and begin to consider how to implement it in their classroom or school.
How does the Online Course provide ongoing support for teachers?
The Online Course is facilitated by a local educator (district employee) who has completed the pre-requisites and who will provide ongoing support to teachers taking the course and coordinate collaborative learning groups. Your district may decide to have participants take the course entirely online, attend face to face training sessions, or complete the course through a combination of online and face to face work, a type of implementation that we call a blended model.
What are the pre-requisites for the course facilitator?
The facilitator…
  • is a district-employee;
  • has completed the three day SIOP Training for Teachers OR attended a SIOP I Institute;
  • should be comfortable enough with the SIOP Model to facilitate and address questions from new learners; and
  • must participate in Online Course Facilitator Training, either the two-day onsite option or the Connected option (remote training). See next question below.
Is the Online Course Facilitator Training Required?
Yes. This is required so that the facilitator understands the organization and technology features of the SIOP Online Course, and learns how to effectively support teachers as they take the course.

There are two options for the SIOP Online Course Facilitator Training:
  1. Onsite: two days; 5-30 participants
  2. Connected: two three-hour sessions remotely through conference call and web seminar; 1-5 participants
What time commitment is involved for the facilitator?
The time commitment will vary depending upon your method of implementation for the SIOP Online Course. As a general rule, the Facilitator can anticipate spending three hours as a facilitator for each hour of the coursework.
How long should we run the Online Course for?
We recommend that you pace the course over two to four months. (Note: Generally, districts have access to the Online Course for 365 days from the initial date of the Online Facilitator training.)
Can a district/school receive onsite training if they have participated in the SIOP Online Course?
Yes. A school or district that has trained their teachers through our Online Course may wish to contract for onsite services to support implementation of the SIOP Model such as Feedback and Observation, Component Enrichment, or Coaching and Implementation. Those who have successfully completed the online course have the equivalent of Training for Teachers which is the pre-requisite for additional services.
